Elmer is the Executive Director of the Center for Community Health Education Research and Service, Inc. (CCHERS). CCHERS is a community/academic partnership comprised of universities, hospitals, the health department and a network of 15 community health centers in Boston. The partnership promotes community engagement through education, research, and service. He has 35 years’ experience in Boston’s communities of color as a community organizer, health care clinician, administrator, public health practitioner, and more recently as community researcher. Prior to CCHERS, he served as CEO of the Whittier Street Health Center in Roxbury, MA for 17 years. During his tenure at CCHERS he has developed partnerships with NGOs in South Africa as a Kellogg Foundation fellow 1992-96 and as a member of a Massachusetts delegation under the state’s “twinning agreement” with the Eastern Cape Province 2000-2005. Elmer joined the South Africa Partners’ Board of Directors in 2015.
